Join us at the Murrysville Community Library to continue exploring new ideas about nature, connections, survival, and knowledge in our evening, adult discussion program. The Pushing the Limits group is taking a summer vacation but will reconvene in October. Three books have been selected for October and participants can choose to read one or more during the hiatus.

The following comments are from group leader Chuck Greenberg.

"Here is the list for summertime reading. Enjoy all or whichever works for you. These books and more will be discussed in the Fall.

1. Dan Egan’s
The Death & Life of the Great Lakes, which was suggested by Kathy Cooper (Norwin). It is a close-to-home, natural extension of the Rachel Carson stories and our Homestead visit. It is also very topical these days because of the strong movement to undo the EPA and its purposes. And, the EPA was a product of Rachel Carson’s very popular books and teachings. The story is important because the Great Lakes represent 20% of Earth’s surface fresh water sources. The current push-back from vested business against science is one that we have visited over and over in our readings.

2. Margaret Attwood’s
The Handmaid’s Tale is a fictional story that begins with the loss of fertility among women of a future time because of environmental pollution. The story that unfolds from that has a lot in it that some might characterize as “political.” However, again, what I think that we will see is the consequences of push-back by those who have vested interests in preserving their own power and wealth.

3. Peter Russell’s
Prince Henry ‘the Navigator’ A Life recounts the beginning of the application of European science and engineering to the maritime exploits that led to ecological imperialism (Crosby) in the New World. It is a 15th century account of the kinds of commercial Push that we see in our own time, ones that often proceed without regard to all subsequent implications."

Check at the Circulation Desk to request a copy of one or more of the books.
